Our Natural Killer (NK) cells already do a good job at looking for wrong cells. They work much like T cells in the immune system. A currently approved therapy is known as CAR-T, which modifies NK outside the body. These cells learn to recognize a common cancer marker and destroy those cells. So far this works well on blood cancers, but has not been as successful at tackling solid tumors.

The new therapy also modifies NK cells to attack malignant cells, but these NK cells can tell the difference between a malignant cell and a normal cell that might share the same antigen. First tests are focusing on breast cancer, but the odds are good that the scheme will work with other solid tumors.
